Haystack 2025 Weaving

My current weaving excursion started when I was at Haystack in September. When I was packing for the trip the night before, I knew that I was responsible for bringing all of my materials to use in the studio. I really hadn’t been weaving for the past year, so I started grabbing from my stash to throw crap into my suitcase. On a whim, I threw in some old bedsheets that I had consigned to my fabric stash, ripping them into strips just sounded cathartic.

The theme here was to just weave. Don’t overthink. I even made a threading error that affected the design (see if you can identify the mistake), but continued anyway. These particular fabric strips were from a pillowcase, and they turned out to be the perfect length to weave a single row with each strip. No additional cutting needed, no need to handle joining the weft in the middle of a row.

After I got back from Maine, I finished the weaving more properly as a wall hanging. I twined two rows on each end (when hung, the top and bottom edges of the piece) to neaten the fabric strip fringe. I whipped together bamboo skewers to make a more substantial dowel for hanging.

The fun didn’t stop there. I was way too ambitious when winding my warp at Haystack, and I had several yards left at the end of our two-week session. I hate waste, so I rolled the excess warp up in packing paper to continue using it on another loom (that process of reusing the warp will be a separate post). Once I was back in Ottawa, I rented a loom at the local weaving guild’s studio to continue this weaving exploration.

Since I had to rethread everything anyway, I got the threading right this time. Can you spot my threading error in the Haystack weaving?
